Latin American children choose Internet over TV (kind of).

A survey conducted by the Spanish university of Navarra and internet educational organisation EducaRed showed some interesting though questionable results about children and their relationship with the Internet in Latin America. 21,774 pupils aged 6-18 years were surveyed in Argentina, Guatemala, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Venezuela. They filled in online forms adapted to their age and country, which were used as an educational tool in classrooms. The survey was done in the schools.

To the question “If you had to choose between the web and TV, what would you choose?” The web was chosen by:

  • 42% of 11 year-olds
  • 61% of 14 year-olds

I don’t think this tells much about usage, it’s a hypothetical question asked to very young children sitting in front of a computer when asked. I wonder if the answer would be the same if asked while watching TV.
Then a somewhat disturbing result was also released:

70% of children aged 10-14 said they access the Internet on their own, and a third of those had arranged to meet someone they met on the  Internet.

Unfortunately this is the only information they released, and couldn’t find any more details.

The article (and its incredibly misleading title) is here:
