Some time ago we received a request for an online study in Cuba, I couldn’t help laughing at the request. The fact that Cuba is not a threat to anyone anymore maybe makes people forget how bad things are there in general.
I came across this article this morning, it accurately describes the Internet access situation in Cuba which apparently suffered an even deeper blow recently. Here are some facts:
- There is no high speed Internet access for Cuban homes
- Foreign visitors can access the Web in hotels, where Internet cafe prices of $12 an hour and strict guest policies keep out average Cubans
- One report estimated that only 220,000 of the country’s roughly 11 million people are online
- “With less than 2 percent of the population online, Cuba is one of the world’s most backward countries as regards Internet usage,” the report said, ranking it as the worst in Latin America.
