We thought we could give out a couple of tips, a lot of you out there could use them!
• It has to be short, over 20-25 minutes is too long, not even a TV show is that long!
• It has to look like the kind of forms that people are used to complete online all the time (think Google, Yahoo, and so on). No funny levers and funky colours.
• It has to go to the point and avoid repetition, many surveys made for CATI are too repetitive and look absolutely ridiculous when used for online. Remember the panellist is actually reading it so they can always re-read the question if they didn’t get it in the first place.
• Keep the amount of questions on one page reasonable. The panellist shouldn’t have to scroll more than once to see the whole page. This also helps to get better partial results in case of drop outs.
• Talk to people in Internet speak. People on the Internet are used to be treated informally and casually, not like the average CATI operator. Talking to people in casual, simple terms makes surveys easier to read, more fun and easy to fill out.
• Remind people about confidentiality. For some reason some people seem to trust more in an anonymous uninterested voice on the phone than an impersonal online questionnaire, so remind people as often as possible that their responses are absolutely confidential.
